Please note that this is about arranged marriages! Even in arranged marriages -
there are some fly-by-night arranged marriages are common where attractive
Green Cards are getting flashed to ignore the traditions and invent the timings
suited for both parties. When marriages are made in heaven, what is the
necessity to verify and check the matching matrix? Yet, the process has
to follow, continue and the show must go on and on.
There are instances where the parents of the boy and girl agreed
and accepted and decided for the completion of the marriage. The reason
may be that both families were very near and dear, that the girl and boy were
studying at the same school, college and university and both are wealthy and
powerful - so there may be a kind understanding that the wealth should be
within their family instead of getting it distributed to other families through
marriages.
These kinds of situations bring tricky situation to the
astrologer - who has to find the words and respective supporting arguments to
establish that the boy and girl is a matching pair according to the
Sashtra. Earlier the astrologer - having known both the families closely,
he will try and analyze and elect a strong powerful Muhurtha for the marriage -
by which the sustainability of marriage is assured. In some cases, where I was
witness - the stature of Astrologer ( the pundit) is much more important.
The words he spoke, the guidance he gave - are more or less the ordinance
itself and will take care of any bad aspects or bad timings involved in the
marriage matching.
Whereas in these days, when the families agree for the marriage
and they also insist the particular period by which the marriage has to be
completed and the astrologer has to make several combinations and alternations
- if possible - to fix the earliest time. The results and consequences of
that function - some times very sad and miserable.
There are two or three different opinions about the number of
factors to judge the marriage matching, but our learned scholars mostly lean
towards the eight = kuta judgement given in Muhurtha Chintamani, the commonly
accepted standard text on Muhurtha
Marriage matching is done on the basis of the birth asterisms of
the boy and the girl, if the birth asterism of the girl is not known, the
matching may be judged between birth - asterism of the boy and the name -
asterism of the girl. If the birth asterism of the both the boy and the
girl are not known, the matching may be judged between their name
asterism. But the matching should never be judged between the name
asterism of the boy and the birth asterism of the girl.
The 8 factors fro the marriage matching are:
1 Varna
2. Vasya
3. Tara
4, Yoni
5. Gragamaitri
6. Gana
7. Rasi
8. Nadi
The marks of which are receptively 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 for the total sum of
36. The minimum number of marks for the marriage marching is 18 out of
36.
VARNA: The Varna of the boy's birth-sign ( janam Raasi) should be superior to
the Varna of the Girl's Birth sign, then it gains 1 mark. Though the
varna of the boy's birth-sign is inferior if the lord of the birth sign is
superior, 1 mark is given.

VASYA : The signs are classified into the five following groups
1.
Mithuna, Kanya, Kumbha and the 1st half of Dhanus are human signs
2. Kataka,
the 2nd half of Makara and Meena are the aquatic signs
3.
Vrishabha, Mesha the 2nd half of Dhanus and the 1st half of Makara are the
quadrupeds
4. Simha is
the sylvan sign
Vrichika is
an insect.
TARA : Count from the girl's asterism of the boy's asterism. Count from
the boy's asterism to the girl's asterism,. In each case divide the number by
9. The remainder 3,5,7, are evil. The remainders 1,2,3,4,6,8,0 are
good. If the remainders in both cases are evil - Tara does not score any
marks. If one is good while the other is evil, then Tara scores one and
half mark, if both are good then score is 3 marks.
YONI : Marks are assigned according to the friendship of the animals
represented by the asterisms.

GRAHAMAITRI :
Assign marks according to the friendship, hostility and neutrality of the Moon
sign lords of the boy and the girl. :
Friendship
5 marks
Friendly -
Neutral
4
Neutral
3
Inimical -
friendly
1
Inimical -
neutral
Half mark
Inimical
Zero marks
Exceptions:
-
Even though the Grahamaitri (the friendship between the planets) is absent
between the lords of the Moon-signs of the boy and the girl, the friendship of
the navaamsa lords of the Moon would suffice to fetch 5 marks
-
The Grahamaitri need not be judged if the bright signs pf the boy and girl are
same, the birth-signs of the boy and the girl are same, the birth-asterisms
being different.
-
if the birth signs are different, the birth-asterisms being the same, the
grahamaitri need not be judged.
EFFICACY OF GRAHAMAITRI :
The presence
of the grahamaitri can mitigate the evil of Varga, Varna, Gana and Yoni etc.,
It can even destroy the evil Rasikuta (Nava-panchama, Shadashtaka, Dwidwadasa
etc). The grahamaitri in particular is a must in the case of Brahmins for
marriage matching.
GANA : The asterisms are divided into tree groups of Ganas Viz: Deva Ganna,
Takshasa gana and Manushya Gana
Devagana - Anuradha, Punarvasu, Mrigasira, Sravana, Revathi,Swati, Hasta, Aswini
and Pushaymi ( 9)
Rakshasagana - Makha, Aslesha, Dhanistha, Jyestha, Moola, Satabhisha, Krittika,
Chitra, Visakha (9)
Manushyagana - Pubba, Poorva Bhadra, Uttara Bhadra, Uttara, Uttarashada. Rohini,
Bharani ( 9)
Explanation: If the Gana of the girl and boy are the same, it is excellent.
If Deva and Manushya - it is good, if Deva and Rakshsha - it is ordinary
but if it is Manushya and Rakshasha - it is the evil combination!
Exceptions:
-
In the preence of good Raasikuta, Yoni kuta and grahamaitri, the Rakshasa gana
of the GIRL is not an evil!
-
If the birth signs of the girl and boy are same, with different birth asterisms
or if the birth signs are different with the same birth asterisms, the evil of
Gana, Nadi and grahamaitri need not be considered.
-
In the presence of Grahamaitri and good Rassikuta, the evil of Gana is
mitigated.
RAASI KUTA : If the birth-signs of both the boy and the girl are the same with
different asterisms, it is considered an excellent matching. Next best is the
same asterisms with different signs. Matching should not be done in the case of
the same birth-signs with same asterisms. Matching should be rejected if the
birth - signs, asterisms and padas are the same. In the case of same asterisms,
the following 8 are acceptable. -- Rohini, Ardra, Pushya, Makha, Visakha,
Sravana, Uttarabhadra, Revati.
DWIDWADASA (2 & 12) : If the birth-sign of the boy is the 2nd from that of
the girl, it is good. Some say this is evil. But the following pairs (2 &
12 or 12 & 2), Meena, Mesha, Vrishabha-Mithuna, Kataka-Simha, Kanya-Tula,
Vrischika-Dhanus and Makara - Kumbha are acceptable (Jaganmohana).
TRIEKADASA (3 & 11) : This is good for matching. Chaturdha-Dasama (4 &
10) is good for matching. ButTula-Makara, Vrisha - Simha, Mesha-Kataka,
Mithuna~ Meena, Dhanus-Kanya and Kumbha-Vrischika..should be avoided ( as per
Muhurtha - Deepika)
NAVAPANCHAMA (9 & 5): Because of different opinions, it's better to avoid
Meena-Kataka, Vrischika-Kataka, Kumbha-Mithuna and Makara-Kanya.
SADASHTAKA (6 & 8): Mesha-Kanya, Vrisha-Dhanus, Mithuna-Vrischika,
Kataka-Kumbha, Simha-Makara-are not accepted. But Mesha-Vrischika,
VrishabhaTula, Mithuna-Makara, Kataka-Dhanus, Simha-Meena and
KanyaKurnbha are acceptable.
SAMASAPTAKA (1 & 7): If the birth-signs are mutually the 7th of each it
could be a good matching. But Kataka - Makara and Simha-Kumbha are evil for
matching.
8. NADI KUTA : :The 27 asterisms are divided into three kinds of Nadis.
1 st NADI Aswini, Aridra, Punarvasu, Hasta, Uttara, Jyeshtta, Moola, Satabhisha,
Poorvabhadra.
2nd NADI Pushyami, Mrigasira, Chita, Anuradha, Bharani, Dhanishtta,
Poorvashada, Pubba, Uttarabhadra.
3rd NADI Swati, Krittika, Aslesha, Uttarashada, Vishaka, Rohini, Makha,
Sravana, Revati.
The asterisms of the boy and the girl should not be in the same Nadi. Being in
the 2nd nadi is more evil.
EXCEPTIONS TO NADI :
1) The nadikuta needn't be judged in the regions south of Godavari (Nasik,
Mumbai, Pune, Sholapur, Mysore, Chennai and Andhra Pradesh.) The Nadi is
not evil in the case of the same birth sign with different asterisms and in the
case of different signs with the same asterisms.
Krittika, Rohini, Mrigasira, Ardra, Pushya, Jyeshtta, Sravana,
Uttarabhadra and Revati do not have Nadi blemish.
If the same lord of birth-signs of the boy and the girl is Venus, or Jupiter or
Mercury, one needn't think of Nadi blemish. To sum up-grahamaitri removes the
evils of Rasi, Yoni, Varna and Gana. A good Rasikuta can remove the evil of
graha-vairam. The Grahamaitri, the good Tara and Vasya can mitigate the evil of
the remaining five kutas.
